We Can All Get in Better Shape for the Summer!!!

IT’S WHAT YOU’RE EATING
By Mike Furci (mike@bullz-eye.com)

The enemy to weight loss and health is not fat, protein or carbohydrates. It’s fat, protein, carbohydrates (and other manmade substances) consumed with the low-fat/high-carbohydrate diet that has been forced upon us by the medical, food and edible oil industries. Started in the mid-1950s as the Lipid Hypothesis , this politically correct diet has been a dismal failure. We are getting fatter and unhealthier because we are eating anything other than what our bodies are designed to process. Add to this the fact that most Americans get the vast majority of their physical activity walking to and from their cars, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Although a lack of physical activity plays a role in our being fat, carbohydrates — especially simple carbs or sugar — shoulder most of the blame. There are many people who exercise regularly, and yet cannot seem to lose the excess fat. They are not giving their bodies a reason to use fat as fuel. If you’re not losing fat, you’re eating the wrong foods. It’s astonishing how many people will say, “I’m eating right, I just can’t lose the weight.” READ MORE….

The “Power Up Your Brain” Series

This is the first part of our Power Up Your Brain series that was inspired by the “Power Up Your Brain Book” written by David Perlmutter, M.D., F.A.C.N. and Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D. I read this book last summer when a friend of mine, Attila Kun who is a clinical hynotherapist recommended it to me. Since them I have become very interested in how the brain works and how to improve it or at the very least keep it healthy.

Turmeric or more specifically Curcumin the active ingredient in turmeric used as a spice in Indian cuisine for 1000’s of years has been praised for many mind and body health benefits.

Here are some reasons to add Turmeric to your diet:

• Helps detoxify your liver
• Is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent
• It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects
• May slow down, prevent, or stop many types of cancers including prostate, skin, and pancreatic.
• May help or prevent many brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Let’s focus a little more on the brain benefits here. Is it a coincidence that elderly residents of rural India, who eat large amounts of turmeric (curry), appear to have the lowest incidence of Alzheimer’s in the world? Maybe let’s see…

From: David Perlmutter, M.D. “Neurogenesis: How to Change Your Brain”
What the researchers discovered was that within each of our brains there exists a population of neural stem cells which are continually replenished and can differentiate into brain neurons. Simply stated, we are all experiencing brain stem cell therapy every moment of our lives.
As one might expect, the process of neurogenesis is controlled by our DNA. A specific gene codes for the production of a protein, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) which plays a key role in creating new neurons. Studies reveal decreased BDNF in Alzheimer’s patients, as well as in a variety of neurological conditions including epilepsy, depression, schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Curcumin
Because curcumin, the main active ingredient in the spice turmeric, increases BDNF, it has attracted the interest of neuroscientists around the world. Interestingly, in evaluating villages in India where turmeric is used in abundance in curried recipes, epidemiological studies have found that Alzheimer’s disease is only about 25 percent as common as in the U.S. There is little doubt that the positive effects of enhanced BDNF production on brain neurons is at least part of the reason why those consuming curcumin are so resistant to this brain disorder.

I hope that you have enjoyed this first installment of the Power Up Your Brain Series. Please check out some of our videos as they are quite informative and can be very funny

Beans – Legumes, The Super Food

Beans, beans, good for your heart, the more you eat….Well…. we all know the rest of that story. It’s true, beans do cause gas, but by using certain soaking and cooking techniques and some digestive enzymes like “beano” you will be okay and your significant other will let you back into the bedroom.

Legumes are a staple food all over the world and are one of the best sources of soluble fiber. They’re low in fat and high in good quality protein when combined with a whole grain like brown rice. I like to make a quick and very filling lunch of ½ can of lentils mixed with a small amount of brown rice and some chicken or beef broth. Add some of your favorite spices and you are good to go!!!!!

So if you are trying to lose weight and tired of feeling hungry then fill up on beans. They are low on the glycemic index and have many health benefits. Here are some more reasons:
-Beans contain important fiber which keeps the system moving right along. The soluble fiber in beans helps lower levels of damaging LDL cholesterol in the blood, thus lowering heart-disease risk. And by slowing down carbohydrate absorption, soluble bean fiber fends off unwanted peaks and valleys in blood glucose levels — especially valuable to people with diabetes. They also assist in warding off some types of cancer.
-Beans are also a great source for folic acid and B vitamins.
-Beans come in so many colors! Pink beans, green beans, black beans, brown beans – all tasty, all nutritious, all diet friendly

Everything I needed to know about Entrepreneurship I learned from a Comedy Troupe (SERIES)

Posted by paulhlatky on February 6, 2012

The Relationship of the Founders

The strong relationship I had with my best friend made it so much easier to command attention from the other members when we first became a group. I met him the first week of college volunteering with FYSOP for disabilities and we quickly became inseparable. He was a huge Alaskan hockey player and I was a tall lanky kid from Queens which made for a unique dynamic people found hilarious. The other founding members quickly meshed into our clique as we transformed from comedic misfits into a respectable comedy group.

Lesson Learned: The strong leadership my friend and I had coupled with the budding friendships within the team allowed us to focus on other things (i.e. being funny) which in turn made us more attractive to prospective talent. Your organization could have the best talent in the world, but if they don’t mesh well then the work will suffer. When your team enjoys each other’s company (both professionally and personally) they will work harder and more creatively to reach common goals. The organic culture this fosters will be more attractive to prospective talent in search of fun companies with innovative solutions.

I Don’t Have Time To Be A Good Dad

Here is a great article written by my friend Matt Marshall over at Tried and True Fitness. I hope you enjoy it.
I Don’t Have Time To Be A Good Dad

by Matt Marshall on December 21, 2011

Lately, I’ve been getting quite a few emails from people explaining the reason they don’t work out is a lack of time.
I get it. My schedule doesn’t have any blank spots either.
But I ALWAYS make time to work out. Here’s why:
A few years back, someone asked billionaire mogul Richard Branson how to be more productive. Branson answered “work out” and explained that exercising actually gave him 4 EXTRA hours of productivity each day.
He wasn’t the only successful person to make such a statement. Abraham Lincoln once said, “If given 6 hours to chop down a tree, I’ll spend the first 4 hours sharpening the axe.”
Working out is like sharpening the axe. Spending an hour in the gym makes you a better and more productive person during the other 23 hours of the day. Read More…..

Can Oil of Oregano Beat the Cold or the Flu?

I think so……

Several years ago I heard a guy by the name of Dr. A. W. Martin talking on the radio about the benefits of Oil of Oregano. Since then I have done some of my own research on this stuff. It can be a strong anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic oil that can reduce pain and inflammation and effectively fight off infections.
The best thing it has done for me is help fight of colds. All you have to do is at the first sign of a cold is put several drops on your tongue and then swish it around for 10 or 20 seconds, then swallow. I warn you, this is going to burn a bit (maybe a lot) but is well worth the effort. Because of this process I rarely catch a cold or the flu.

“Oil of Oregano” Smells like a pizza, goes down like Buckley’s and Tequila. Give it a try.

Dr. Martin’s Natural Flu Shot

The most important thing during the cold and flu season is to protect and build your immune system. The best way to prevent winter viruses is through natural supplements. We strongly recommend these four powerful remedies that work together to achieve maximum immune-building during the cold and flu season:
1. Oil of Oregano
Oregano is high in antioxidant activity which is probably the origin of the many health benefits of oregano oil. Oregano oils, thymol and carvacrol are believed to be the main sources of its benefits. The most widely known and spread benefit of oregano oil is its ability to cure mild stomach problems. It is also well known for its cough-clearing qualities. However oregano has many other benefits, among these: exterminating fungus, digestive problems, migrane headaches, athlete’s foot, sore throats, breathing problems, dandruff (and other skin problems). These two phenols work “synergistically” and that is the reason oil of oregano packs a double punch in antiseptic power and explains why it is infinitely more potent in microbial killing power.
All of this helps make oregano oil a significant factor in treating internal and external fungi, including athlete’s foot. Skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema can be improved with the treatment as well. Ingram explains the astonishing discovery that “oil of oregano outright destroys all varieties of fungi and yeasts, regardless of where they reside.”
In addition to fighting various fungi, oil of oregano is useful to fight against bacteria and parasites. As Ingram asserts, “oil of oregano’s antiseptic powers are immense… it inhibits the growth of the majority of bacteria, something that prescription antibiotics often fail to accomplish.” In the case of parasites, oil of oregano has had success neutralizing worms, amoeba and protozoans.
Additional uses for oregano and oil of oregano are multi-dimensional. They have been found helpful in combating diarrhea, intestinal gas and idgestion problems, as well as sore throat and breathing difficulties. Oil of oregano can be of immediate help against bee stings and many venomous bites until medical attention can be reached. Oil of oregano has been suggested as a treatment for dandruff, diaper rash and other skin disorders.
Numerous university studies (Georgetown, Cornell, Tennessee) and independent research have shown oregano oil to be a potent antimicrobial. The ever growing body of evidence is showing oregano oil to be useful as an antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal agent rivaling even pharmaceutical antibiotics such as streptomycin, penicillin, vacnomycin, nystatin and amphotericin in it’s ability to eliminate microbes. Remarkably it accomplishes this without promoting the development of drug resistant strains and other problems often attributed to the use of standard antibiotics.
In addition to this already impressive list of abilities, oregano oil is also a powerful parasitic expellant; is valuable as a food preservative; and has been used to decontaminate foods from potentially harmful pathogen’s. Carvacrol has been identified as the chief constituent behind oregano oil’s extraordinary properties and is thought to work synergistically with the other components found in Wild Mediterranean Oregano Oil. These findings have been published in various scientific functions.

Meditation 101

Meditation refers to a state where your body and mind are consciously relaxed and focused. Practitioners of this art report increased awareness, focus, and concentration, as well as a more positive outlook in life.

Meditation is most commonly associated with monks, mystics and other spiritual disciplines. However, you don’t have to be a monk or mystic to enjoy its benefits. And you don’t even have to be in a special place to practice it. You could even try it in your own living room!

Although there are many different approaches to meditation, the fundamental principles remain the same. The most important among these principles is that of removing obstructive, negative, and wandering thoughts and fantasies, and calming the mind with a deep sense of focus. This clears the mind of debris and prepares it for a higher quality of activity.

The negative thoughts you have – those of noisy neighbors, bossy officemates, that parking ticket you got, and unwanted spam– are said to contribute to the ‘polluting’ of the mind, and shutting them out is allows for the ‘cleansing’ of the mind so that it may focus on deeper, more meaningful thoughts.

Some practitioners even shut out all sensory input – no sights, no sounds, and nothing to touch – and try to detach themselves from the commotion around them. You may now focus on a deep, profound thought if this is your goal. It may seem deafening at first, since we are all too accustomed to constantly hearing and seeing things, but as you continue this exercise you will find yourself becoming more aware of everything around you.

If you find the meditating positions you see on television threatening – those with impossibly arched backs, and painful-looking contortions – you need not worry. The principle here is to be in a comfortable position conducive to concentration. This may be while sitting cross-legged, standing, lying down, and even walking.

If the position allows you to relax and focus, then that would be a good starting point. While sitting or standing, the back should be straight, but not tense or tight. In other positions, the only no-no is slouching and falling asleep.

Loose, comfortable clothes help a lot in the process since tight fitting clothes have a tendency to choke you up and make you feel tense.

The place you perform meditation should have a soothing atmosphere. It may be in your living room, or bedroom, or any place that you feel comfortable in. You might want an exercise mat if you plan to take on the more challenging positions (if you feel more focused doing so, and if the contortionist in you is screaming for release). You may want to have the place arranged so that it is soothing to your senses.

Silence helps most people relax and meditate, so you may want a quiet, isolated area far from the ringing of the phone or the humming of the washing machine. Pleasing scents also help in that regard, so stocking up on aromatic candles isn’t such a bad idea either.

The monks you see on television making those monotonous sounds are actually performing their mantra. This, in simple terms, is a short creed, a simple sound which, for these practitioners, holds a mystic value.

You do not need to perform such; however, it would pay to note that focusing on repeated actions such as breathing, and humming help the practitioner enter a higher state of consciousness.

The principle here is focus. You could also try focusing on a certain object or thought, or even, while keeping your eyes open, focus on a single sight.

One sample routine would be to – while in a meditative state – silently name every part of you body and focusing your consciousness on that part. While doing this you should be aware of any tension on any part of your body. Mentally visualize releasing this tension. It works wonders.

In all, meditation is a relatively risk-free practice and its benefits are well worth the effort (or non-effort – remember we’re relaxing).

Studies have shown that meditation does bring about beneficial physiologic effects to the body. And there has been a growing consensus in the medical community to further study the effects of such. So in the near future, who knows, that mystical, esoteric thing we call meditation might become a science itself!
